No.032Super Meat Boy01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Cling to slow your fall
- 02Kick away with jump
- 03Steer toward the next wall
- 04Chain kicks or land
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
A shaft 6 tiles wide and 12 tall; the right wall has spikes from tile 7 to 9.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
The player zig-zags three times, then kicks twice on the left wall alone to bypass the spikes.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Same-wall kicks gain only 1.5 tiles each, costing 2 extra seconds but no damage.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
A moving saw at the top forces a fast zig-zag, testing whether they trust the quicker rhythm.
How it plays
Touching a wall midair slows your descent and restores a jump; jumping pushes you away at a fixed angle. Zig-zagging between walls makes vertical shafts climbable, while spikes or slick surfaces mark where clinging fails. Slide speed, dust puffs and a kick sound confirm the cling registered.
What the player weighs
- Zig-zag quickly up a shaft, or hang on a wall to read the hazards above.
- A tight kick gains height; a wide kick crosses gaps but risks overshooting.
02Start small

03One mechanic, different implementations

Super Meat Boy
Meat Boy sticks to almost any wall and kicks off instantly, so wall-jumping appears in nearly every level; responsive air control even lets him climb a single wall.

Hollow Knight
Wall-clinging comes from the Mantis Claw, found around Mantis Village mid-game, so it doubles as a key to areas seen earlier but unreachable.
The difference worth noticing
Super Meat Boy treats wall-jumping as a day-one skill tested at speed; Hollow Knight withholds it to structure exploration.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Let each filled inventory slot shorten wall-kick height, so players at a shaft choose which stacks to stash before climbing.
