No.124Oxygen Not Included01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Spot a sick member
- 02Trace the spread
- 03Block, isolate or clean
- 04Watch cases fall
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
Germs carpet the corridor from toilet to dining hall; two members have food poisoning.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Place a sink at the toilet exit that everyone must pass.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Corridor germs fall 90%; each bathroom trip takes three seconds longer.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
Check the water supply next to prevent re-infection.
How it plays
Pathogens cling to items, floors or water and spread as characters move. A dedicated overlay shows contamination, and players block it with wash stations, quarantine or rerouting. Fast action zeroes cases; delay drags down the whole group.
What the player weighs
- Checkpoints slow traffic
- Quarantine costs labor
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Oxygen Not Included
Germs live on objects and in piped liquids; players use a germ overlay and kill them with sinks, sanitizers, chlorine or heat.

Niche - a genetics survival game
As far as I recall, creatures can catch and pass on illness, some genes relate to resistance, and breeding or separation reduces the impact; details are uncertain.
The difference worth noticing
Oxygen Not Included blocks spread with buildings and plumbing; Niche leans on genetics and population management.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Roads and doorways carry contagion: give the clinic its own access road to cut cross-infection at the cost of longer commutes.

What Counts as a Room
Four walls are not always a room; meet the rules and it starts working.

Balanced Diet
Full is not the same as fed right; a one-note diet slowly wears you down.

Stop the Bleeding
A wound is bleeding out the clock; use whatever is at hand.
