Stress builds quietly, and when it caps the character makes bad choices for you.

No.120RimWorld01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Suffer a bad event
- 02Stress climbs
- 03Schedule relief
- 04Break or hold steady
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
One member at 85/100 stress, two rooms left.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Camp now and spend one supply to calm the party.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Stress falls to 60, but only one supply remains.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
One more crit next fight could still break them.
How it plays
Injury, witnessed death and harsh conditions raise stress; past a threshold the character may refuse orders, act destructively or break down. Relief costs time, money or facilities, so it must be planned.
What the player weighs
- Press on or retreat to decompress
- Spend on comforts or on productivity
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

RimWorld
Mood sums many modifiers; below set thresholds colonists may suffer mental breaks of varying severity, from binge eating to wandering or arson.

Darkest Dungeon
At 100 stress a hero is tested for resolve, usually gaining an affliction and occasionally a virtue; stress maxing out further can trigger a heart attack.
The difference worth noticing
RimWorld breaks come from everyday accumulation; Darkest Dungeon spikes within one expedition and can flip into a virtue.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Link stress to companion approval: a trusted ally halves stress gain, but seeing them hurt spikes yours.
