No.216Dota Underlords01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Collect tagged units
- 02Count distinct tags
- 03Cross a threshold
- 04Push for the next tier
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
You have 3 Rangers, one short of tier 4; the shop shows a weak Ranger and a strong non-Ranger.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Buy the weak Ranger to hit tier 4.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
All Rangers gain attack speed, raising total damage about 35%.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
The player looks for a stronger Ranger to replace the weak one.
How it plays
Each unit has one or more tags; reaching 2, 4 or 6 distinct units with a tag unlocks escalating bonuses. Duplicate copies don’t count, which pushes variety. A synergy panel with progress and lit tiers is the main feedback.
What the player weighs
- Chase a high tier vs raw unit strength
- One deep synergy vs several shallow ones
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations
Teamfight Tactics
Each champion carries traits that activate at distinct-unit breakpoints, and the whole trait set changes each season.

Dota Underlords
Heroes belong to alliances that unlock bonuses once enough distinct members are fielded.
The difference worth noticing
TFT rewrites traits each season; Underlords kept a steadier alliance set.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Deploy under a point budget so filling high synergy tiers with cheap units competes against fielding expensive powerhouses.
