Hit the throttle on cue in the countdown to rocket off; too early and you spin.

Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
The countdown runs 3, 2, 1; the ideal press is within about 0.2 seconds after '2' appears.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
The player presses just as '2' appears.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
A rocket start fires, moving from 8th to 5th before the first corner.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
With traffic bunched ahead, the player must pick inside or outside for the first turn.
How it plays
During the pre-race countdown players press or hold the throttle at a specific moment; good timing gives a launch boost, too early means a stall or spin. It's a small, clear skill check that opens every race with a spike of tension.
What the player weighs
- Chase the perfect launch vs a safe ordinary start: going for it risks a stall.
- Focus on the launch vs watching rivals: the first corner battle also matters.

03One mechanic, different implementations
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Pressing accelerate as the '2' appears gives a rocket start, while pressing too early spins your wheels.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Collection
Timing the throttle during the countdown grants a launch boost of varying strength, though I'm not fully certain of the exact timing rule.
The difference worth noticing
Mario Kart uses a single timing point, while Sonic Racing leans toward graded results based on throttle control.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Bring the launch into a kitchen: igniting the stove on cue heats the pan fast, while firing too early scorches the first dish.

Midair Pitch Control
In the air you rotate the vehicle so it lands on its wheels, not its roof.

Airborne Trick Boost
Pull a trick while airborne and land with a boost, but land mid-trick and you pay for it.

Drift-Charge Boost
Hold a drift longer for a bigger release boost, but hold too long and you run wide.

- Solo decisions
- 01Start a drift into a turn
- 02Hold it to build charge
- 03Release on exit
- 04Boost out and readjust
