A bite lasts a moment; strike too early or late and you come up empty.

No.231Stardew Valley01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Cast and wait
- 02Watch the float
- 03Strike on the bite
- 04Move to the reel-in
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
The float bobs twice; a true bite shows an exclamation mark for about 0.5 s.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
The player holds still and waits for a third.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
The float plunges, the mark pops, the player strikes and the reel minigame starts.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
On the next cast the player starts telling species apart by nibble rhythm.
How it plays
After casting there's a random wait with possible nibbles, then a clear visual or audio cue for the real bite. Players must strike within a short window; too early spooks the fish, too late lets it go.
What the player weighs
- React to nibbles vs. wait for the true bite
- Stare at the float vs. watch your surroundings
02Start small

03One mechanic, different implementations

Stardew Valley
After casting, an exclamation mark and sound appear over the farmer's head; press in time to enter the fishing minigame, or the fish escapes.

Dinkum
You can see fish shadows approach the bobber and nibble before the bobber dips on the real bite, which is when you reel; I'm not fully sure of the exact timing rules.
The difference worth noticing
Stardew uses a bold exclamation cue; Dinkum asks you to read the fish's shadow yourself.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Mix with stealth awareness: footsteps and shadows spook fish, so creep to the water; low alert means longer bite windows.

Managing Line Tension
Pull too hard and the line snaps; too soft and the fish escapes.

Keep the Fish in the Zone
The fish darts around a bar; keep your catch zone on it to land it.

Rising Alert Stealth Routes
Guards don't spot you instantly; suspicion builds, and you reroute inside that buffer.
