No.051Terraria01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Find a new resource
- 02Learn your tool is too weak
- 03Gather to upgrade
- 04Return and harvest
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
The player's copper pick (tier 2) hits iron ore (tier 3) and bounces off.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
They mark the spot and gather 15 copper and 5 wood for a bronze pick.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
With the bronze pick, each swing yields iron and the clang turns into a crunch.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
Iron unlocks armor, and the player heads deeper.
How it plays
Each resource has a hardness tier, and only tools at that tier can harvest it. New tools are crafted from what you can currently gather, forming a clear upgrade chain. Seeing out-of-reach resources early creates clear goals.
What the player weighs
- Upgrade tools first vs. build with what you have
- Push into danger for rare ore vs. grind safely
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Terraria
Pickaxes have a pickaxe-power stat, and certain ores and blocks require enough of it (hellstone needs a fairly high value), pushing players through bosses and upgrades.

Valheim
You need an antler pickaxe for copper and tin, and better axes for certain trees; each biome's resources sit behind the previous tier's tools.
The difference worth noticing
Terraria spells out gates with a numeric stat; Valheim ties them to biome progression order.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Mix with stealth awareness: stronger tools are louder, so mining near guards raises alert, forcing a choice between quiet weak tools and risk.

Dig to the Right Depth
The ore you want lives at a certain depth, so you have to get there.
