No.221Stardew Valley01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Till and sow
- 02Water and tend daily
- 03Watch growth stages
- 04Harvest when ripe
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
The player has 100 energy daily and watering costs 2 per tile; 30 tiles are planted and a mine beckons.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
They expand by 15 tiles to 45.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Watering now costs 90 energy, leaving 10 for the mine, barely enough to dig.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
They start saving for automatic watering to free energy from chores.
How it plays
Crops advance through stages by day or time, and players must tend them each cycle; missing care stalls growth or cuts yield. Daily chores cost time and energy, forcing a balance between farm size and other activities. Changing crop sprites and wet versus dry soil colors are the clearest feedback.
What the player weighs
- Plant more for yield, or keep it small to free time for other things.
- Grow fast crops for frequent harvests, or slow ones for a big payout.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Stardew Valley
Crops need daily watering to grow, costing energy and time; as farms grow, players shift to sprinklers to automate the chore.

Core Keeper
Players till soil in an underground world to grow crops; as I recall, watered ground speeds growth, and crops feed into cooking and buffs.
The difference worth noticing
Stardew Valley makes crop care the core daily rhythm; in Core Keeper farming is logistics supporting exploration and combat.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Place fields on cliff terraces reachable only by climbing, so daily watering routes must budget stamina and rest stops.

Long-Term Orchards
Fruit trees are pricey, slow and space-hungry, but once grown they pay every year.

Regrowing Crops
Plant once, harvest many times: a slower start, then income every few days.

Seasonal Planting Windows
Each crop grows only in certain seasons; miss the window and wait a year.
