No.236Stardew Valley01The core loop

Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
Bubbles rise 5 tiles out; a full cast reaches 7. Bubbles mean quick bites, far water means better quality.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
The player charges to about 80% and lands in the bubbles' center.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Bites come in 2 seconds, three in a row, all regular quality.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
When bubbles vanish, they switch to full casts for quality.
How it plays
Cast distance and landing spot affect species, quality or bite speed. Farther usually means deeper water and better fish; bubbles or visible shadows boost bites. Players charge casts for power and move between spots.
What the player weighs
- Max distance vs. precise placement near shadows
- Stay on a bubble spot vs. chase schools elsewhere
02Start small

03One mechanic, different implementations

Stardew Valley
Charging sets cast distance; farther water is deeper and often yields better quality, and bubbling spots temporarily speed up bites.

Dinkum
Fish shadows are visible in the water, so players cast near them to draw a bite; shadow size roughly hints at fish size.
The difference worth noticing
Stardew's placement hinges on distance and bubbles; Dinkum has you aim at visible fish.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Combine with water engineering: adjust sluices to deepen or shallow areas, shifting the best cast spots and available species.

Gear-Gated Catches
Seeing a fish isn't enough; you need the right rod or net to land it.
