Durability and Upkeep

Tools wear with use, and breaking at the wrong moment is a disaster you plan around.

01The core loop

Action → feedback → next choice
  1. 01Use a tool or weapon
  2. 02Durability drops
  3. 03Repair or replace
  4. 04Plan the next trip

↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.

Walk through one round

A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.

  1. T1

    Turn 1 · The situation

The axe is at 20%, about 8 more trees. The plan is 15 trees and a cave.

  2. T2

Turn 2 · The player chooses

The player repairs the axe at the workbench and brings a spare stone axe.

  3. T3

    Turn 3 · The feedback

After the trees the main axe is at 40%, and the spare doubles as an emergency weapon in the cave.

  4. T4

Turn 4 · The next decision

The player considers building an outpost workbench near the cave for field repairs.

How it plays

Each tool has durability spent per use, failing or breaking at zero. Players repair at a workbench or craft replacements and must estimate usage before a trip.

What the player weighs

  • Carry a spare vs save space: a backup is safe but costs a slot.
  • Use your best gear vs save it for key fights: good gear also wears out.

Valheim

Valheim

P1

Tools, weapons and armor wear down and repair for free at the matching workbench or forge, so upkeep is mostly the cost of returning to base.

Don't Starve
D

Don't Starve

P2

Most tools and weapons have limited uses and vanish when spent, requiring re-crafting and a steady supply of basic materials.

The difference worth noticing

Valheim restores durability for free at base; Don't Starve treats tools as consumables to re-craft.

Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.

Durability and UpkeepInventory & resources+

Only rooms that meet requirements, with a bench, roof and light, can repair gear, making the workshop a planned core building.
