01The core loop

Action → feedback → next choice
  1. 01Receive his new message
  2. 02Read the thread so far
  3. 03Pick a reply
  4. 04He answers and the chat is logged

↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.

Walk through one round

A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.

  1. T1

    Turn 1 · The situation

Late at the office he texts: still not gone? Options: Almost done, or How do you know?

  2. T2

Turn 2 · The player chooses

The player picks How do you know?

  3. T3

    Turn 3 · The feedback

He replies with a photo of the store downstairs: look up.

  4. T4

Turn 4 · The next decision

The player wants to see the other branch and starts looking forward to tomorrow's text.

How it plays

A simulated phone receives texts at story beats or daily slots. The player picks from a few replies, the thread plays on and is stored in history. Choices rarely change endings; they decide which line he answers with, and the appeal is him catching your tone. Badges and logs build the illusion that he is really there.

What the player weighs

  • Push daily for presence, or send fewer so it never feels like a chore.
  • Attach affection values for clarity, or hide them so replies feel like a real chat.

03One mechanic, different implementations

Light and Night

Light and Night

P1

The in-game phone has texts, voice messages, calls and video, plus red-envelope texts on holidays; texts branch, and an item lets you re-pick.

Reign of Nightfall

Reign of Nightfall

P2

Chats with characters arrive on a “magic typewriter” rather than a phone, fitting the period setting (per player reviews).

The difference worth noticing

Light and Night builds the phone into a full mini social app; Reign of Nightfall swaps it for a typewriter so even the interface serves the setting.

Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.

04What could you combine?

Bridge interactive-film episodes with texts: your last choice decides what he sends, so consequences land before the next episode starts.
