No.093Baldur’s Gate 301The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Spend points on a plan
- 02Test it in play
- 03Pay to refund points
- 04Reassign and try again
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
A level-6 mage is stuck on a magic-resistant boss, carrying 600 gold; respec costs 100.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Pay 100 gold to reshape two levels into fighter for heavy armor and an extra attack.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
The boss falls, but one fewer spell slot slows later encounters.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
Now the player weighs saving 500 gold to switch back or buying a good weapon and staying hybrid.
How it plays
Spent points can be refunded at a specific NPC or with an item, costing gold or rare materials that often scale with level or use count. It softens bad picks while the cost keeps each rebuild deliberate.
What the player weighs
- Experimenting vs saving: respec money could have bought gear instead.
- Counter-build vs general build: rebuilding for one fight may mean paying again to switch back.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Baldur’s Gate 3
Withers, who joins your camp, rebuilds a character from level 1, including class and ability scores, for a small gold fee.

Grim Dawn
Skill points are refunded at the Spirit Guide for iron bits, scaling in cost; points in the mastery bar itself cannot be refunded.
The difference worth noticing
Baldur's Gate 3 nearly invites free rebuilding, while Grim Dawn keeps some investment permanently sunk to preserve commitment.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Let players respec on credit with daily interest, so rebuilding into an earning setup becomes a cash-flow gamble against mounting debt.
