Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
Swords at 40; a death costs 5%, about 2 levels. An elite camp ahead has a 60% win estimate.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
The player returns home for full food buffs before attacking.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Still killed: Swords drops to 38, but a no-drain grace period starts.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
Using the grace window, the player charges back in, betting on no further loss.
How it plays
On death the character loses a share or all of their skill levels, sometimes with a grace period against repeated losses. Skills become assets to protect, raising the stakes of every fight.
What the player weighs
- High-reward zones vs keeping skills: the dangerous areas pay best.
- Training time vs loss risk: the longer you train, the more a death hurts.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Valheim
Death removes a percentage of every skill, then grants a 'No Skill Drain' status so repeat deaths during it cost nothing more.

Project Zomboid
Death is permanent; a new survivor starts over and all trained skills are gone, though skill books and sandbox options can soften it.
The difference worth noticing
Valheim uses a gentle percentage with a grace window; Project Zomboid wipes everything with permadeath.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Lost skill levels crystallize at your corpse, recoverable on a corpse run, turning the penalty into a risky retrieval trip.
