No.205Graze Counter GM01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Hug the bullet stream
- 02Brush past the hitbox
- 03Gain resources
- 04Spend it to strike back
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
You have 2 bombs and earn one per 20 grazes; the boss fires ring patterns and you're on your last life.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
You weave through ring gaps, deliberately skimming bullets.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Grazes jump to 40 with crisp sounds, and you're up to 4 bombs.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
The boss enters its final phase; you save bombs for the densest pattern.
How it plays
Bullets have a graze zone larger than their damage hitbox; near misses count and pay resources. Those fund bombs, power-ups or healing. The closer you play to danger, the more you earn and the more a slip costs.
What the player weighs
- Chasing grazes pays well but risks a hit at any moment
- Keeping your distance is safe but starves resources

03One mechanic, different implementations

Graze Counter GM
Grazing fills a gauge that fuels counter or burst attacks, and the whole scoring and attack rhythm is built around it.

Touhou Luna Nights
In this side-scroller, grazing enemy bullets restores MP and related resources, with extra value during time stop (details hedged).
The difference worth noticing
Graze Counter makes grazing the offense engine of a shmup; Luna Nights grafts it onto a metroidvania as sustain.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Preview enemy attack paths so players can plan the longest graze route before bullets fly.
