Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
With three food slots, the player has grilled meat (+25 HP), berries (+20 stamina) and stew (+40 HP, +15 stamina) before a boss fight.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
They eat all three: +65 HP and +35 stamina.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
The fight drags 12 minutes, the berry buff fades first, and in the final phase they lack stamina to chain dodges.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
Next time they bring a longer-lasting stamina food and look for a moment to eat mid-fight.
How it plays
Food grants timed stat buffs, but only a few can be active at once, such as three foods or one food buff. Players build combos for the next outing: health for fights, stamina or luck for gathering. Buff icons and shrinking timers prompt when to eat again.
What the player weighs
- Eat premium dishes now, or save them for riskier moments.
- Stack one stat, or balance for surprises.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Valheim
Players can have up to three different foods active, each adding health or stamina that decays over time, and the same food can't stack, so pre-trip combos matter.

Stardew Valley
Many dishes grant timed buffs like speed, luck, or fishing and mining levels; only one food buff and one drink buff stay active, with new ones replacing old.
The difference worth noticing
Valheim uses food to form your core stats, making it essential; Stardew Valley's buffs are optional boosts aimed at specific activities.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Put meals and abilities under one shared loadout budget, so a richer meal means fewer skills equipped.
