Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
Minute 8, level 12: options are Knife +1, new Garlic, or +10% speed. One reroll left.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Getting swarmed, the player takes Garlic for close-range clearing.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Nearby enemies melt, gem pickup speeds up, and three more levels come in two minutes.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
With one weapon slot left, future picks need more care.
How it plays
Each level-up draws 3-4 random options from a pool: new weapons, upgrades or passives. The player takes one, with limited rerolls, skips or banishes to steer the randomness.
What the player weighs
- New item vs upgrade existing: widen the build or deepen its core.
- Strongest now vs best later: you may take a weaker pick to set up a synergy.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Vampire Survivors
Level-ups offer random weapons and passive items with separate slot limits, plus unlockable reroll, skip and banish tools.

Brotato
Level-ups bank during a wave and are resolved after it as stat picks with paid rerolls, followed by a shop for weapons and items.
The difference worth noticing
Vampire Survivors drafts mid-combat around weapon combos; Brotato batches stat picks between waves.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Tag each option with a load cost under a cap, so a great draw may mean dropping an old ability to free budget.
