No.091Stardew Valley01The core loop
Action → feedback → next choice- 01Reach a milestone level
- 02Compare two exclusive branches
- 03Lock one in, gain bonus
- 04Reshape play around it
↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.
Walk through one round
A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.
- T1
Turn 1 · The situation
Farming hits level 5: choose +10% crop price or +20% animal product price. You own 20 plots and 2 chickens.
- T2
Turn 2 · The player chooses
Crops earn about 500g/day versus 60g from animals, so you take the crop branch.
- T3
Turn 3 · The feedback
Income rises about 50g/day, and level 10 will only offer the two crop-side options.
- T4
Turn 4 · The next decision
You expand fields and plan high-value crops, letting livestock stay secondary.
How it plays
At set levels the player chooses between mutually exclusive perks; the pick grants a lasting bonus while the alternative closes or becomes expensive to reclaim. Later options usually branch from the earlier choice, narrowing the character into a specialist.
What the player weighs
- Immediate payoff vs late-game ceiling: the handy branch now may lead to a weaker endpoint.
- Depth vs flexibility: specializing hard makes you strong but brittle when the situation shifts.
02Start small
Scope is an editorial estimate for the minimum prototype, not the reference game or a production schedule.
03One mechanic, different implementations

Stardew Valley
Each of the five skills offers a profession pick at levels 5 and 10, with level-10 options depending on the level-5 branch; a statue in the sewers lets you re-pick for gold.

Grim Dawn
Players commit to two masteries that combine into a dual class; points sunk into the mastery bar cannot be refunded, so the pairing defines the build.
The difference worth noticing
Stardew's forks tune an economy and can be bought back; Grim Dawn's fix a combat identity almost permanently.
Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.
04What could you combine?
Let specializations change market visibility: the trader branch previews tomorrow's prices, the artisan branch reveals the true value of only your own goods.
