Pacing Fire Under Heat

No magazine, just a heat bar—push too far and you're stuck cooling down.

01The core loop

Action → feedback → next choice
  1. 01Fire and build heat
  2. 02Watch the heat bar
  3. 03Stop before the limit
  4. 04Cool, then resume

↻Feedback changes the situation — the next round starts from there.

Walk through one round

A simplified design example. Situations and numbers illustrate the mechanic, not exact rules from a reference game.

  1. T1

    Turn 1 · The situation

Your minigun gains 20% heat per second; overheating locks it for 4 s, and idle cooling drops 30% per second. A swarm approaches.

  2. T2

Turn 2 · The player chooses

    You fire 4 s to 80%, pause 1 s to 50%, then fire again.

  3. T3

    Turn 3 · The feedback

Fire barely breaks and the swarm is held at the entrance.

  4. T4

Turn 4 · The next decision

A big bug charges out, and you weigh pushing to overheat to kill it.

How it plays

Each shot adds heat, which bleeds off when idle. Hitting max overheats the gun into a long forced cooldown. Some designs reward running near the edge or let you vent heat early.

What the player weighs

  • Sustained fire suppresses but overheating leaves you defenseless
  • Conservative bursts keep you armed but cap peak output

03One mechanic, different implementations

Deep Rock Galactic
D

Deep Rock Galactic

P1

The Gunner's minigun and some energy weapons build heat and must cool after overheating; certain mods add burn effects at high heat.

Titanfall 2
T

Titanfall 2

P2

It's closer to an energy pool than classic heat: Ion's split shots, laser and abilities draw from one energy bar that must be paced (an approximate example, details hedged).

The difference worth noticing

Deep Rock's heat purely paces shooting; Titanfall 2's energy pool makes shots compete with abilities.

Case notes are Yoroll editorial summaries; rules may change between versions.

With early wave calls, summon the next wave before your gun cools for a bonus, betting your remaining heat will hold.
